General Jose Tadeo (also known as José Tadeo Monagas)

[10/28/1784 - 11/18/1868]'


1847: Chosen by José Antonio Páez as President of Venezuela as a Conservative.
→He soon starts leaning towards the Liberals.
→ He Appoints Liberal Party ministers.
→ He abolishes capital punishment for political crimes.
→ Páez revolted, but Monagas crushes the insurrection.
→ He Attempts to emancipate slavery.

1851: Presidential term ends

1855: Elected president of Venezuela for 2nd term
→ He arranges for a new Constitution (passed in 1858) which grants him further powers.
→This new Constitution leads to a constitutional (and armed) crisis.

1858: Presidential term ends.


*A hero of the Venezuelan War of Independence (1811-1823) .
  • He fought under Bolívar in the revolt against Spain.

*Extremely unpopular because he:
⇒had favoritism-bound policies
⇒had disregard for laws passed by Congress when he disagreed with them
⇒gave too much power to the Executive branch.

1858: José Tadeo is overthrown by Julian Castro.
1868: he heads a counterrevolution with forces called the Azules but he dies just after returning to power.
